The ACT Government yesterday passed legislation to establish the City Renewal Authority and the Suburban Land Agency.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr said “The City Renewal Authority will focus on encouraging and promoting a vibrant city through the delivery of design-led, people-focussed urban renewal, and encouraging and promoting social and environmental sustainability.”

“The Government will also establish the Suburban Land Agency to deliver new greenfield residential estates and more affordable housing. The new Agency, under the governance of a new board, will deliver land releases, affordable housing, better suburbs and focus on urban renewal projects in town centres and suburbs.” said Mr Barr.

Master Builders ACT Executive Director Kirk Coningham welcomed the introduction of the new Bill saying “The creation of a new authority to drive urban renewal has the potential to transform Canberra into a world class city.”

“A renewed focus on affordable housing by the Suburban Land Agency is important”, Mr Coningham said.
