ACT Budget 2018-19 to Deliver Jobs and Confidence for Construction Industry

Master Builders ACT has today welcomed the release of the ACT Government's 2018-19 budget, which delivers a $31.9 million dollar surplus for Canberrans.

The strong financial results are driven by population growth exceeding 7,100, making the ACT the fastest growing State or Territory, second only to Victoria.

Master Builders ACT Chief Executive Officer, Michael Hopkins said, "The $2.8 billion 4-year infrastructure program will provide secure jobs for the region's 14,000 construction workers and small businesses."

The infrastructure program includes $552 million for new initiatives in 2018-19, in addition to the $1.1 billion for existing projects from previous years.

"With Canberra's population growth rate above the Australian average, new funding for building and safety inspectors will be welcomed to ensure compliance of existing building and safety laws," he said.

Mr Hopkins said, "The capital works program, together with infrastructure spending announced by the Federal Government and other East Coast State Governments, will increase the demand for new skilled construction workers."

"Funding to attract more women into trade jobs is welcomed, but more support for the region's not-for-profit training providers will be required to support the infrastructure program into the future," he said.

To house Canberra's booming population 17,000 new dwellings will be provided over 4 years.

Mr Hopkins said, "Funding to address housing choices, to establish a design review panel, and stamp duty exemptions from 1 July 2019 for eligible first home buyers, are all welcome initiatives."

"To meet Canberra's booming population growth we hope government continues to increase the supply of land for new homes, particularly for new single detached houses."
