In service areas (bathroom, toilet, kitchen and laundry), special attention must be given to the present or future needs of the residents.

Because of the tasks performed within these areas, the bathroom/WC usually requires provision for specific, if not specialised, equipment or fixtures. The areas should be designed for the unrestricted access and convenience of wheelchair users.

Fixtures, appliances and their controls must be of a type, and installed at a height, that permits easy operation for any user with a disability.

It is in service areas that most alterations and modifications are required. Therefore designers and builders must check the dimensions with those specified in the latest edition of the Australian Standard 1428.1 and 4299.
